The show
of comet McNaught above Cerro Paranal was just fantastic !
I have first been able to observe the comet with binoculars in broad daylight
when it was very close to the Sun (January 14).
The following days we saw the comet emerging from the horizon brighter and higher
in the sky every day. The head of the comet was very easy to spot a few minutes
after sunset. On the 17 and 18 of January we have just been amazed to discover
how extended was the tail and its complex and rare striae structure.
On those dates, after the comet had set, the tail was still emerging from the
Pacific Ocean and was still visible more than one hour ! The display was similar
to an aurora in the light of the late twilight. On January 19 we got the full
extend of the comet and its tail in the astronomical twilight and a beautiful
Venus/Moon conjonction took place on January the 20th at the far edge of the
tail. The cosmic perspective was total...

Voilà maintenant quelques jours que dans l'hémisphère
sud le crépuscule est illuminé par la plus belle comète des 50 dernières années !
Le gigantisme et la beauté de
cette comète facilement visible à l'oeil nu sont en effet à couper
le souffle.
Depuis Paranal, sous un ciel pur d'altitude et parfaitement noir, le coucher
de la comète sur l'océan pacifique est un spectacle tout simplement
incroyable. Le show de McNaught est de loin supérieur à celui des
comètes Halley et Hale-Bopp et Hyakutake il y a 10 ans. Elle a été comparée
aux comètes Ikeya-Seki (1965) et West (1976) mais elle pourrait être
encore plus grande et brillante, ce qui en ferait une des comètes les
plus importante depuis très longtemps. On l'appelle déjà "The
Great Comet of 2007".
La lune sous forme d'un fin croissant, en conjonction
avec Vénus arrivait dans le jeu ce 20 janvier rendant le spectacle encore
plus féérique.
